What does “link in bio” mean?
You see ‘link in bio’ under posts all the time. Learn what it means, where to find the link and what a useful page behind it looks like.
‘Link in bio’ appears under countless Instagram posts. The first time you see it, it may not be obvious what to do. Even when you post yourself, you might wonder whether you are using it well.
It means: the address I just mentioned is in my profile. Instagram does not let you add a clickable link to the text beneath a standard post, so creators point people to their profile. Here is where to find the link, why it works that way, what to put behind it and which mistakes I see most often.
What does link in bio mean in plain language?
Your bio is the short text beneath your name on Instagram. A profile can also show a clickable web address. When a creator says ‘link in bio’, they mean: open my profile and tap that link.
You will come across variants that mean the same: “link in bio”, “link is in my bio”, “link in bio” or simply “see bio”. In English posts you read “link in bio” or “tap the link in my bio”.
Where can you find that link?
On a telephone it works like this. Tap the name or profile photo above the message. You arrive at the profile. Below the name and bio text there is a line that has a different color, usually blue or with a line underneath. That’s the link. Tap it and a page will open.
If you don’t see anything, that person has not set up a link. This happens more often than you think, even with accounts that refer to it under their posts.
Sometimes a list of buttons opens instead of a website. That’s called a link page and it exists because one link fits in the bio while the creator wants to offer multiple things.
Why do creators keep saying it?
Because Instagram built it that way. If you put a web address in the text below your message, it will remain normal letters. No one can tap it and almost no one retypes an address.
Everything a creator does on Instagram, every reel, every story and every carousel, therefore ends up in that one line in their profile. That makes the link in your bio the busiest place on your entire account.
You can also add a link sticker to a Story. Stories disappear after a day, so creators still use their bio for a link that should stay available.
What do you put behind it as an entrepreneur?
This is where many businesses lose people. The post promises one thing, but the link opens a general homepage with a menu and welcome text. Visitors came for something specific; making them search for it gives them a reason to leave.
What does work is one link page where at the top it says exactly what your last message was about. If your post changes, the top button will change accordingly. The link in your bio remains the same, so you never have to adjust it again.
What happens after the click matters. Let visitors take the next step on that page: sign up with an email address, buy your workbook through iDEAL or start a course. Findori Links puts those actions on one page, with payment via Mollie and safe delivery.
Five errors I see with that link
- No link set. You refer to it and it says nothing. Take a look at your profile from your phone.
- A link to the homepage. Your visitor already knows something and has to start over.
- Ten buttons with no clear priority. Too many equal choices slow people down. Put the most relevant next step first.
- An address that no one recognizes. A long string of characters with question marks in them does not inspire confidence. Use a clean address or your own domain.
- No reason to tap now. “More info in bio” doesn’t rush anyone. “Three spots left” or “free this week” is.
What’s in it for you if you don’t sell anything yet?
Even without an offer, that line in your profile is worth something. Add a page with a sign-up form and one promise: a checklist, a worksheet, a short manual. Someone leaves their email address and you have a list.
That list is the only audience you really control, because you only see a follower when the algorithm wants it and remains an email address. If you sell your first product in six months, you will immediately have people to show it to. How to set this up is shown below leads and newsletters.
Can you put more than one link in your bio?
Instagram now allows five links. Only the first one is visible on your profile and the rest are behind an extra tap, so in practice one works. When those five separate links are enough and when a page works better, it says multiple links in your Instagram bio.
